Jignesh Vasavada
1.5 Stars Baba
The title got you reading, right? That is exactly what the
movie makers wanted, to be noticed…and guess what, they put a middle-aged man
in the centre of the poster to kill the feel.
So much for an Adult Gujarati Movie in modern times.
The title was such that everyone wanted to watch it but no
one wanted to be seen watching it.
One look at the poster and your expectations are set. Keep
no expectations.
So, off you go to catch what is going to be an education of
your life (literally). Heck, even the samosas were sitting erect on the plate
not to mention the cola lacked fizz.
I was sure there would be some babaal…but nothing happened
and the movie just began quietly.
Now, here are 10 myths about around Gujarati Sex Education.
But at the onset, I must say that this docu-urban Gujarati
film is a good effort. Seems honest with a decent intent, could have been
better with some good casting, tighter story and better screenplay.
Read on
- Pre-marital sex is strict no-no. The movie has bravely taken up the topic of Sex Education, but has played it safe, very safe.
- Gosh who makes those videos and presentations on genitals and disease. Feels like a cigarette warning picture. Tries to put you off sex, forever.
- So, if the movie is about sex, then the jokes too have to be cheap and vulgar. Where is this rule?
- Ok Alright, the villain speaks a blatant double meaning word and we are supposed to grimace at the similarity. Why?
- And then there was a gym scene and your hopes build up only to be squashed after a few bench presses (yeah yeah literally) and some push-ups. That is all that you will get to feast on.
- Why does a banana have to symbolize male organ? I may not be able to peel a banana anymore (there goes my natural Calcium).
- Boss, this is a Gujarati conspiracy to show that only men are pervert. All vulgar questions were asked by boys/men and girls asked intelligent ones, Why?
- I still wonder, the teacher was hired for Skill Development Class and he was imparting Sex Education, did I miss out on his skill training?
- Now we know why India is so populated. Men and women are so fertile. One encounter results in pregnancy.
- Lastly, never understood one thing. The entire movie is about morals and ethics and honesty about sex, but an abortion without the parents’ knowledge is ok!!
I can go on and on. But I will give it to director Pranav
Patel for a serious gamble. He did try well.
Sadly, the lack of story,
screenplay, inadequate quality of lead cast and ultra poor/loud/jarring
background score coupled with some average acting makes this educational movie
boring.
There are some sparks of below the belt humour but nothing
leaves you in splits. Sanjay Prajapati needs to re-look at his acting career,
but there is good hope for Samarth Sharma, Rajan Thakkar and heroines yesha
Gandhi and Divya Bhatt. Chetan Daiya too does a decent role.
If you are parents then chances are you have passed the sex
education course with flying colours. Now, the mantle to teaching to your kids,
well, the movie has some ideas but it would be best to be brave and easily talk
to your kids rather than brave watching the movie.
This educational film can cut itself down to half and work
as an educational documentary. For everything else, there is always WhatsApp.
